Steve Jobs- The Guru


In 2005 Steve Jobs gave the commencement speech at Stanford University. In this blog post I am providing an excerpt of that speech, additional quotes, and some commentary in a  hope that it makes you think as much as it made me think.

“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been no for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

The latin term Memento Mori means that we should remember that in some yet to be known by us future moment we will die. Our entire life is just a very small blip in earths timeline that extends billions of years. My point is the same point that Steve Jobs was making and that is to live life fully and don’t worry about the opinions of others because someday they will all be gone as well. None of us are leaving this thing called life alive so it is important to not merely exist but to be happy and fulfilled. 

With each passing day our window of life is getting smaller. The last thing anyone desires is to get the end of their life and have a ton of regrets. Remember always that you are more important than anything because without you nothing exist. Your entire world only exist because you are alive. It is you that is in control and it is you that sits in the highest position regardless of what is happening in your life. You are the lead character in your story. We are more powerful than we realize yet become powerless when we allow other peoples opinions, challenges, and stress to become bigger than us. 

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

 We have the power to change our entire life if this is what we really want and pursue it consistently everyday with persistently without quit. “Change the way you look at things and things you look at change.” (Wayne Dyer). It is without a doubt that not everything that happens is within our control but that does not ever mean we should neglect what is within our control to make ourselves and the world better.

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” (Steve Jobs).
